Spay & Neuter

What Is Spaying and Neutering?
Spaying refers to the removal of the reproductive organs of a female animal, while neutering refers to the removal of the male animal's testicles. By having this routine surgical procedure performed on your pet, you are providing them with a healthier, longer life.

You will be helping us save lives by reducing the number of unwanted pets.  These pets are condemned from birth to starvation, death, illness, or an existence without care or love.  Do your part to help us help them, SPAY or NEUTER your pet.

Why Spay and Neuter?
Too many pets, not enough homes! Each year, around 10 million pets are turned in to animal shelters. Only 25 to 30 percent of these animals are reclaimed by their owners or adopted into new homes. The rest, some 4 to 6 million dogs, cats, puppies and kittens, must be euthanized because nobody wants them. As a pet owner, you have a responsibility to help end this terrible problem. Altered pets are healthier because the urge to search out mates is eliminated. Altered pets are less likely to roam from home and be injured in fights or killed in traffic. In fact, altered pets have twice the average life expectancy of unaltered pets, partly due to a lower chance of suffering from mammary, uterine, prostate and testicular cancers. Another benefit to spaying and neutering is discounted dog license fees.

Merced County Animal Control has created this program for Merced County residents needing financial assistance with spaying and neutering
their dogs and cats. Funds for the S.N.A.P. program are provided by collected fines for unaltered impounded animals and donations. Our goal is to decrease the number of unwanted cats and dogs in Merced County.
